5 years old

My first born is 5 years old as of yesterday.  Oh dear, how time flies.  We had a fantastic birthday party with help from two of my favorite friends.  They always help when I throw a party or put together a gathering.  They are always there, always, actually. I'm so thankful for them.

Sarah had a blast.  I love this girl.  She is brave, graceful, loving, nurturing, determined, hip, and she is my daughter.  Her sense of style is impeccable (I mean, it is in my eyes only because who doesn't love leggings and long shirts, complete with a ponytail?), she is super affectionate ('Sarah, please stop caressing my face, it's getting a little creepy' 'Sorry, Mom'), and she loves her sister (ring-a-round the rosies becomes how fast can spin-hurl my sister into the nearest piece of furniture).  She is awesome.

Today we did our 5 year check up and Sarah had to get 3 shots, 1 finger poke, and spray up the nose for the flu.  She fell apart as soon as Allison got her shot.  Sarah was inconsolable and she hadn't even had a single poke.  She physically refused to remove her shirt.  I've never had to restrain her so much.  It was heart-wrenching.  This girl exercised her lungs and her tear ducts and her snot-making-mechanism today.  But she pulled it together, she got her shots, and then she got her baggy full of marshmallows.  Yes, marshmallows have an uncanny way of soothing the soul.  They soothed Allison's right up.  Those tears ran back to her eyes when she saw the baggy I offered.  Sarah was a little more hesitant, but the marshmallows won, just like I knew they would.

Sarah's turning out to be a right tall and lanky little girl.  90th percentile for height.  Don't mind if she does!  All in all she's healthy as can be and will be totally ready for kindergarten next year.  So will I and so will Allison I think.  But my baby girl is growing up and I can't stop my heart from aching...too fast...it goes too fast.

Love you friend! It was a great party and I'm glad I could be there to celebrate! I was telling a coworker about the party and how creative you are. I know you don't realize it but to a non-mom and one who is living in the corporate world, the ideas you come up with are really amazing. Decorating hot chocolate with whipped cream and fun sprinkles? Easy, budget friendly, and completely attention grabbing for a group of 5 year olds! I hope I can come up with these things when it's my time, or I hope you're available for hire! ;)

Boy, do I agree! I still remember the time I took Jennis (who was just a teeny little girl) in for shots, and a nurse I dubbed "Atilla" pushed her into a wall and shot her before she had time to think. Jennis also reacted with full throttle decibles. I wanted to smack her. I did manage to choke out, "I don't think that was necessary" before she swept out of the room. I can't remember what consoled her, but I know she still doesn't like shots very much. It does go fast; just born then walking, just starting kindergarten and then middle school is right there. I still can't believe my time is done, it just went by too quick. Now I am flabbergasted that my grandchildren are getting to be the ages they are, and doing the things they can do. I love your sweet girls, thanks for helping to keep us close through your posts. xo
