neglect

If you follow me on Facebook then it's likely you know that we've take a head first plunge into chicken raising.  I feel like I've neglected to keep my blog audience filled in (mainly the future me) on some other adventures besides my therapeutic emotional barf that I've been dumping lately.  :)  So, onwards and upwards - WE'VE GOT CHICKENS!  They are just about a month old now and slept their first night in their new coop last night.  Oh I was one worried mama!  But they did great.  It was awful nice not to hear their sweet, well-intentioned peep-peep-peeps over and over again all night and day.  So they are officially preparing themselves for laying.  I hope we got some good mama-layers.  Well, they don't need to be mama's...just layers...although I just heard rumor today that there is a rooster running amok in our neighborhood making all sorts of noise!  As if a crazy rooster isn't random enough (just in perfect timing with my chicks making their 'public' debut) Allison started hollering about a dog outside.  I looked and there was a fully clipped (ears and all) bald in the front PITBULL in our front yard.  This didn't look like a friendly-this-is-my-dog Fluffy the Friendly PitBull - this looked like a Don't-Touch-My-Dog-He's-A-Fighter kind of pitbull.  I know that's jumping to conclusions, but I have a family of humans and chickens to think about.  So I shewed him as best I could and sat by the window watching the coop to make sure he didn't get any closer.

Oh the worries that be.

One of the most surprising things about having these chickens is JOEL!  He loves them.  He will watch them and he even said they were super darn cute last night.  I was impressed.  This man does not like animals all that much.  I think he likes our chickens even better now that they aren't messing up our laundry room and making it stinky!  :)  But he sat with me for a good 15 minutes watching them last night.  It was very sweet.  It makes my heart happy that he is getting atleast some joy out of them...although I know he knows that if I'M happy - he's happy.

What else have I neglected to share on my blog?  Our latest bout of ear infections and stomach flu?  (oh yes, that was fun!  And now Joel has it - although in typical Joel form he's still at work through it all)  Joel has a six day workweek this week since they are switching computer systems over.  He was selected as one of two guys to train on them first and will be responsible for all the ordering until they get the others trained over the next few weeks.  That was exciting!

Ah!  We just booked a trip for two to Hawaii.  We'll be taking off for four days in May.  Just Joel and I.  It's a beautiful thing.  I'm putting some money away here and there to pay for food and fun while we are there.  It's a little less overwhelming that way.  Joel mentions every day how excited he is.  It almost didn't happen and I'm so glad it did now that I know he was REALLY looking forward to it.  We are so blessed that friends and family have stepped in to help out with watching the girls.  So appreciated.

I'll update more when I get a moment, but now I feel less neglectful!

Super jealous of that Hawaii trip by the way, but I'm glad you get to go! We just got 6 chicks a few days ago and will get about 10 more from my parents next week. So excited to have fresh eggs again!

I have loved watching the chicks grow up via your updates! I hope you get some good layers too! The dog makes me furrow my brow--grrrr. On the other hand, Hawaii, hooray! Start going on Priceline and bidding on car rentals. I am still getting "$12.00 a day cars!" on my email from trips we've taken in the past! You just have to go to the North Shore and see the Polynesian Cultural Center. (Or the PCC as they say on the island!) And take a GPS!!(Ha! I can just imagine our Bossy Cow voice mangling the Hawaiian street names now!) I could use some sun and sand about now, maybe I'll stow away. :)
