Mom and Dad have been contemplating building a patio-cover for the back porch for literally - YEARS. Apparently, Dad and our old handy-man neighbor used to mull over plans and layouts and designs while sitting outside many warm summer nights. It wasn't until the last few weeks that plans to build became serious as the weather changed and Joel confirmed it was something that he could do. So, the night of my surprise pre-baby gathering, Joel and Dad dug the holes for the posts for the brand-new porch roof. Once those were completed, Joel came back within a few days and filled them with concrete to secure them.

Saturday, Joel got off work early around 11:30 in the morning. He called to let me know he was headed over to start work on the framing (and finish up re-doing the bathroom floor downstairs). Over the course of the afternoon Joel managed to get all the framing for the new roof done.

On Monday, Joel had the day off but was busy with errands until around 3. When he arrived at my parents house at 3, he came bearing 15 sheets of plywood to put on the roof. By 8:30 that evening he had attached and secured all the plywood and layed and secured all the tar paper. All by himself. As my dad has said on numerous occasions, "The man is a machine!"
Mom and Dad are thrilled with their new porch cover and are eagerly awaiting the finishing with the 3tab shingles and installation of the skylights and recessed lighting. They also plan to install some small speakers (would you expect anything less from my father?!) :) Joel will get to all that when he gets some more time off, most likely when the wee one

comes.

Seeing the back of your parents house, I had a flash back of us crawling out the window of your bedroom and laying on the roof - and throwing something. What did we used to throw from there?? Why can't I remember!?!?
Ha! Funny you should mention that because I had the idea to crawl out the window to pass Joel his dinner the other night but being as prego as I am I'd probably get yelled at by husband and parents! :) We threw little mini erasers and would try to hit the trees - when there were trees! I don't blame you for not remembering, mini erasers are about as random as you can get!
Looks awesome! Your parents are so lucky to have such a great son-in-law.
OMG - too funny!! Mini erasers are SO random! If you think about it though, we were about as random as it gets. Blue Warrior, Inca Pachinca Obrien Show, wood and saran wrap, Pizza rolls, calendars, etc. Remember in 9th grade when I had to do that random report on the Holiday Inn and your dad played the founder or CEO or something. That was awesome.
